Slovenia is an experience that every passionate traveler must discover at least once in their lifetime. So small that it can be easily traversed, yet so diverse that it offers hundreds of amazing destinations. It is a country that seems to have understood perfectly what it has to offer and how to present and sell its treasures. I already knew I would love Slovenia even before discovering its beauty, but the experience of exploring the attractions in just three days exceeded expectations. Although this is intended to be a travel guide to Slovenia, it will seem more like a declaration of love and admiration for this fascinating destination.
A small country caught between the Western and Balkan worlds, between the Alps and the Adriatic, between Slavic roots and Austrian, Italian and other influences. Slovenia has just over 2 million inhabitants and an area of just over 20 thousand sq. km.. However, over half of the area is covered by forests, and the diversity of the landscape is extreme. As a holiday destination, Slovenia may seem much more expensive than its neighbors in the former Yugoslav space, but slightly cheaper than its neighbors Italy or Austria. The tourist and related infrastructure is extremely well developed and organized, with highways connecting most important destinations, excellent roads, high-standard accommodation and food, but also impeccably arranged tourist attractions.
The ultimate attribute for this destination is diversity, with high mountains, hills and small areas of plains, a karst plateau with thousands of discovered caves, a small coastal area between Italy and Croatia, medieval towns and castles, traditional Alpine villages and spectacular Gothic churches perched on hilltops and mountain promontories… The capital Ljubljana with its beloved dragons is a city with a bohemian and chic charm, dominated by its imposing castle and the charming streets that stretch near the Ljubljanica River. With its very name paying homage to the love that its inhabitants carry, the capital is just the starting point on a journey through the land of love, according to the national tourism slogan that perfectly characterizes the #ifeelsLOVEnia experience.

Slovenia Travel Destinations
With such a small area and a population, Slovenia is a complex and amazing destination. It offers a multitude of destinations and experiences, being a real revelation for those who do not know its true natural and cultural heritage. Charming towns, wild mountains, amazing caves, solitary churches and much more make Slovenia a special place worth visiting. The most important destinations in Slovenia are presented below, although the best way to discover the country is to wander on roads less traveled…
Ljubljana
The capital of Slovenia, Ljubljana, is a charming city, steeped in legends and surrounded by an aura of bohemian charm. The city of love, as its name suggests, offers an original tourist experience, a unique mix of the chic elegance of a city in central Europe, a relaxed Mediterranean atmosphere and the Slavic undertones evident especially in the free and open spirit of its inhabitants. A small city by the standards of European capitals, Ljubljana can be visited in two days, during which you will be able to experience everything the destination has to offer.
The first attraction and certainly the symbol of the city, along with the dragons that you will surely discover, is the castle, located on a hill that rises above the old center. Dating back to the 11th century, you can reach the Ljubljana fortress either on foot following the several paths that climb the hill in about 15 minutes, or by funicular. The castle looks excellent, offers impressive panoramas of the entire city and contains several interesting attractions inside. Between the castle hill and the Ljubljanica River lie the cobbled streets of the old town, flanked by Baroque buildings that now house hotels, restaurants and museums.
The focal point is formed by the Mestni and Presernov squares, unique for their wide street and the splendid triple bridge. Nearby, you can admire two exceptional monuments, the Franciscan Church and the Cathedral of St. Nicholas, as well as other superb buildings. Another interesting attraction that cannot be missed is the Dragon Bridge, a tribute to the fantastic creatures that, according to legend, ruled over the surrounding swamps. In fact, the dragon is a symbol of the city and there is no souvenir shop without one containing it in various forms.
To the west of the river is the New Town, improperly named because here too you can find superb examples of Baroque, Art Nouveau and Modernist architecture. Between the castle and the charming Tivoli Park, you can also visit Ljubljana’s most interesting museums, the National Museum of Slovenia, the National Gallery, the City Museum, and more. Other monuments and museums are scattered around the center and in Tivoli Park, offering a wide variety of tourist experiences.

Bled Lake
One of the most famous and beautiful lakes in the world is certainly Lake Bled in northwestern Slovenia. Extremely photogenic at any time of the year, set in a natural setting of a fairy tale, with the incredible island on which the charming silhouette of the Church of the Ascension rises, with the castle hanging high on a cliff on the shore, with the multitude of leisure opportunities and the numerous tourist routes around, Lake Bled has become one of the most famous and visited destinations in Europe. Thousands of tourists arrive every day of the summer months, and the lakeside resort becomes extremely crowded.
A glacial lake located at the foot of the Julian Alps whose peaks can be glimpsed at sunset, Bled is a complete destination. You can start your visit with a one-hour walk on the arranged route around the lake, admiring its almost magical beauty from all angles. A visit to Bled Castle is a must, for a unique panorama of the lake and to learn more about the history of the area. You can continue with a traditional boat trip that can take you to the island in the middle where you can visit the church that is an important pilgrimage site. You can also go boating on your own or swim in the lake with amazingly warm and clear waters. Nearby, there are many other interesting attractions, among which it is worth visiting the Vintgar Canyon, the Pokljuka Canyon, caves and impressive waterfalls.

Triglav National Park
Slovenia’s only national park occupies a very large area in the north-west of the country, encompassing a splendid mountainous region with a wealth of natural attractions. A true paradise for nature and mountain lovers in particular, the park has a dense network of hiking trails and paths that provide access to exceptional tourist attractions. Triglav is Slovenia’s highest mountain, at 2,863 meters, and is also a symbol of the country, with the mountain’s three peaks being represented on the Slovenian coat of arms.
Bare mountain peaks piercing the clouds and forested peaks furrowed by wild valleys, traditional villages located in breathtaking landscapes, lakes, waterfalls, canyons and many other beautiful places form an exceptional natural destination. Among the sights not to be missed are Lake Bohinj with its unique panorama from the Vogel peak or the route to the magnificent Savica Waterfall, the mountain road over the Vrsic Pass, the Pokljuka mountain plateau with its authentic rural landscapes and many more. But the real experience in Triglav National Park is exploring the excellently organized mountain trails.

Postojna Cave
A small country like Slovenia has a huge number of caves, a true underground world existing in the sunny mountains and hills of Slovenia. Postojna Cave is undoubtedly the queen of caves in Europe, with an underground system measuring over 20 km in total and being open to visitors since 1819. Almost half a million tourists visit the cave every year, and the experience is spectacular and unforgettable. Located near the highway connecting Ljubljana to the coast, the cave can be visited every day, with groups of visitors being led into the heart of the earth every hour during the peak season.
The Postojna Cave tour lasts 90 minutes, starting with a thrilling journey on a small train through impressive tunnels and galleries. This is followed by a one-hour guided tour that gives you the opportunity to discover the wonders located over 100 meters deep. A multitude of cave formations and splendid galleries follow each other in rapid succession, forming an adventure in a unique and unusual world. Near Postojna Cave there are other caves that can offer adrenaline-filled experiences, but perhaps the most interesting objective that should not be missed is Predjama Castle built on top of a cave, located just a few kilometers away.

Completely renovated in 2018, the hotel is one of the most convenient accommodation options in Postojna, just a 10-minute walk from Postojna Cave. The perfectly equipped rooms and the quality of service is excellent.
Skocjan Caves
If Postojna Cave is much more famous, Skocjan is more spectacular and impressive. This complex destination has been included in the UNESCO heritage and represents a complex system of underground galleries, only a part discovered and only a small part included in the tourist circuits offered to visitors. Two tours are offered that can be combined for a complete experience of the Skocjan Caves.
Along these routes, an incredible immersion is achieved in a unique world, with huge galleries in which fantastic speleological formations develop, an underground torrent with waterfalls formed by the Reka River, which disappears underground, to temporarily reappear where the ceiling of the underground galleries has fallen, forming two impressive natural bridges.
Following the route of the underground canyon or the underground river course, you will discover natural treasures and spectacular geological phenomena. One of the unforgettable moments of the visit is crossing a bridge located almost 50 meters above the underground torrent. If you want to spend more time in this exceptional destination, there is also a museum dedicated to caves, an ethnographic collection in the village of Skocjan, an educational trail, and other interesting attractions.

Perhaps the most beautiful place to visit is the old town of Piran, located on a peninsula surrounded by the waters of the Adriatic and with Venetian influences that can be discovered in the narrow medieval streets.

Nearby, Portoroz is a favorite summer destination for both Slovenians and foreigners, with numerous hotels, restaurants and casinos. Slovenia Useful Information
Slovenia is one of the most welcoming and accessible holiday destinations, even if it is less known to Romanian tourists. With a perfect location at the intersection of important European roads, Slovenia can be visited in a week’s vacation, having time to visit the most important attractions that the country has to offer. In the same vein, it can be visited in any season, but spring and autumn are indicated for the special atmosphere and exceptional landscapes, but also because you will not encounter attractions assaulted by thousands of other tourists.
The highways and roads in Slovenia are mostly excellent, facilitating access to most tourist destinations, even the most isolated ones in the mountains. The vignette for driving on highways is 16 euros (2026) for a week and can be purchased at the first gas stations you encounter after entering the country (it must be stuck on the windshield). Slovenia is an extremely safe and welcoming country, with open and hospitable inhabitants. Most speak at least one other foreign language (English in the tourism industry, Italian or German). As for the costs of a trip to Slovenia, they are higher than in any other ex-Yugoslav country, but the services are also of a higher quality. For hotels, restaurants or traditional products, prices are close to those in Austria or northern Italy, especially in the tourist areas.
