The Spectacular Danube Defile in Serbia

From the first contact with the Danube gorge I was deeply impressed by the greatness and special beauty of this unique destination. If I have been to the Romanian shore several times, discovering most of the places and interesting travel experiences, I always wanted to do the same from the Serbian shore. Along the longest and most beautiful gorge in Europe, Djerdap National Park stretches in Serbia, containing a lot of impressive destinations, but also some lesser-known secrets.

To cross into Serbia in order to visit the Danube gorge, the most recommended place is definitely the customs office at Iron Gates I, a few kilometers west of Drobeta Turnu Severin. Sometimes it can get quite crowded, especially on summer weekends, however, you’ll usually get through in half an hour at most, or maybe even faster. Once in Serbia, road 34 follows the gorge from east to west, being in excellent condition and fairly clear most of the time. Along it are located most of the main attractions of the national park, and some interesting places can be visited if you follow back roads for a few kilometers.

Before heading west, you can take a short detour east to the town of Kladovo, where you can visit the Fetislam Fortress and the small tourist center, as well as the ruins of the Roman fort Diana, located just a few kilometers from the dam. The Djerdap National Park starts right at the Iron Gates, and on the way to Golubac (105 km), you will pass through many spectacular places, which will require quite frequent stops in the roadside parking lots to admire the landscapes. One of the most beautiful places is just before entering the Small Cauldrons, and from here you can admire both the high peaks on both banks, but also the Face of Decebal or the Mraconia Monastery.

On the Serbian side of the Danube Gorge, opposite the Small Cauldrons is the peak of Mali Strbac, while opposite the Big Cauldrons is Veliki Strbac. Just like on the Romanian side, there are hiking trails to viewpoints on the two ridges, somewhat more difficult than those in Romania, and sometimes even more spectacular. The most famous trail starts from a parking lot between the two massifs, and further up it splits into three main destinations (Ploce, Veliki Strbac, Mali Strbac). For any hike inside the park, you will need to purchase a park entrance ticket (290 dinars in 2026 / 3 Euros), usually from park rangers at the beginning or along the trail.

Continuing south, just after entering the beautiful Porec Bay, following a secondary road towards Miroc for 10 minutes, you can reach the point of a trail to the Gradasnica Cave. Back in the gorge, after passing the town of Donji Milanovac, another secondary road climbing up the ridge takes you in a few minutes to the place where a short trail to the Kovilovo viewpoint starts. After another few kilometers through the Danube gorge, right next to the road you can discover the impressive Boljetinska Reka Canyon. One of the most important early archaeological sites in Europe is located right on the banks of the Danube, Lepenski Vir is a fascinating destination where you can see the traces of one of the oldest prehistoric cultures.

A little further down the main road, another interesting tourist route is to the Sokolovac viewpoint, from where you can admire the view of the gorge in all its splendor. The final destination of the journey through this amazing land is the grandiose Golubac fortress, with its 10 magnificent towers mirrored in the waters of the Danube. You can visit this impressive fortress, and the nearby town offers numerous guesthouses and restaurants if you want to stay overnight. All these wonderful places can be visited in 2-3 days, and if you want to return on the same road through the gorge, you can divide the visits into two days. Another option would be to stop on the route, and near Golubac (Usije village) there is a small customs point from where you can board the ferry that goes to Moldova Veche, continuing the adventure on the Romanian shore. The trips (morning and evening) are operated only during the tourist season (July-September) and only from Friday to Sunday.

Djerdap National Park

The largest and most important national park in Serbia, it is located along the Danube Gorge, the largest in Europe. The park stretches for over 100 kilometers along the river (between Novi Sip and Golubac), encompassing the mountain peaks to the south and covering a total area of almost 640 square kilometers. Djerdap National Park was established in 1974, and since 2020 it has been part of a UNESCO Geopark that also includes parts of mountain ranges (total area of 1,330 km2). This spectacular and fascinating destination offers an amazing number and diversity of experiences and attractions, both natural (dramatic landscapes, steep peaks, gorges and caves, flora and fauna) and cultural (archaeological remains, medieval fortresses, authentic villages).

Diana Roman Fort

Right at the entrance to the Danube Gorge, just 2 kilometers from the Iron Gates dam, the Romans built an impressive fortress. Fort Diana is the most impressive ancient monument in the region, quite well preserved and researched. Occupying a strategic position above the Danube, it was part of an impressive strategic system, built on the northern border of the Roman Empire, along the river. Built a few centuries earlier, it was completely rebuilt by Emperor Trajan at the beginning of the Dacian Wars, covering an area of 1.7 hectares and comprising military and civil buildings, a necropolis and other structures. It was partially destroyed by the Huns around 350, then rebuilt during the reign of Emperor Justinian. Today, the archaeological complex offers a fascinating experience, being one of the best preserved historical sites from the Roman era.

Fetislam Fortress in Kladovo

One of Serbia’s most important historical monuments, Feislam Fortress is located just 2 kilometers from the center of Kladovo, about 10 kilometers from the Iron Gates I border crossing. Part of a strategic system of Ottoman fortifications on the Danube, Fetislam consists of two successive structures. The old fortress was built starting in 1524, at the beginning of the Turkish campaigns into Transylvania, while the new surrounding fortifications were erected in the first half of the 18th century, comprising strong walls and bastions. The Turkish garrison finally left the fortress in 1867, when several Danube towns came under Serbian rule. The entire historical complex has undergone an extensive renovation process, today offering an illustrative image of its original appearance, as well as a modern visitor center with exhibitions, a charming park and a stage for performances right on the banks of the Danube. If you have time, you can also take a walk through the nearby modern town of Kladovo, where you can admire the promenade area in the center, the “Saint George” church, the archaeological museum, the beach or the ruins of Apolodor’s bridge, located about 2 kilometers from the center.

Trail to Ploce Panoramic Point

Located between the Small and Large Cauldrons, probably the most popular hiking trail on the Serbian side of the Danube Gorge starts right next to the main road, where there is a fairly spacious parking lot right in the forest. The first part of the trail is shared with two longer ones, which climb to the high peaks of Mali Strbac and Veliki Strbac. The Ploce viewpoint is arranged somewhat between the two, still offering exceptional views of the Cauldrons and fairly easy access for everyone. You will climb for about 1 hour (3 kilometers / +250 meters), on a forest road arranged through the forest. If you do not find a national park ranger at the lower barrier, it is possible to meet them on the trail or on the descent. Take your card with you to pay for the national park entrance fee (290 dinars / 3 Euros). If you want to continue the hike, to reach the Veliki Strbac ridge, you have to climb almost 4 kilometers, with an even steeper slope (2-3 hours), while Mali Strbac is 4 kilometers away on the opposite side, but the slope is gentler (1-2 hours). All these trails are marked with a red dot on a white background, so an offline map app is a great help for GPS orientation.

Trail to Kovilovo Panoramic Point

A very easy and short trail that gives you the chance to admire a wide section of the Danube Gorge in its middle zone, just a few kilometers west of the town of Donji Milanovac. To reach the starting point, you need to leave road 34 on secondary road 164, which goes to Majdanpek. After only 10 minutes you should find a sign for the Vidikovac Kovilovo trail, and the hike through the forest is mostly downhill (1.5 km / 20 minutes). If you continue about 20 kilometers to the unique mining town of Majdanpek, you can visit the nearby Rajkova Cave. One of the longest in Serbia (2,380 meters) and crossed by a river, it has a special speleological importance, offering a 1400-meter circular tourist trail, extremely attractive (speleological formations, archaeological finds).

Boljetin Canyon

Located just before the archaeological complex of Lepenski Vir, about 40 km east of the town of Golubac, this spectacular canyon was formed by the Boljetinska Reka River 110-170 million years ago. A veritable open-air geological and paleontological museum, the rather short canyon offers a fascinating experience. Located just off the road through the gorge, the canyon could be explored on foot, but a recent flood destroyed the tourist trail, which will be rebuilt, according to the national park administration.

Lepenski Vir Archaeological Site

One of the most important archaeological sites in Europe was discovered in the 1960s in the Danube Gorge, 40 kilometers from the town of Golubac. Lepenski Vir has become a household name in the field over time, with discoveries here changing entire theories of human history. Although there have been many controversies, including the need to move the site from its original location with the construction of the Iron Gates dams, Lepenski Vir remains a cultural destination of universal importance. It is considered the oldest planned settlement on the European continent, comprising trapezoidal dwellings unique in the world, the first monumental sculptures with features in the history of art, and genetic evidence of continuous human habitation for five millennia. Once called “Europe’s first city,” the main settlement at Lepenski Vir contains dozens of unique dwellings, some built on the site of previous ones, as well as a wealth of artifacts discovered in its area, including sculptures of great value. Most researchers have dated the beginning of this settlement between 9,500 and 7,200 BC, and together with other settlements discovered in the region, they were given the name Lepenski Vir culture. Today, a modern museum center houses the settlement relocated a few decades ago, while the original site is located 100 meters upstream and about 15 meters below the waters of the Danube. Under the metal and glass dome that covers the reconstructed site, over 130 structures of the prehistoric settlement can be admired, as well as comprehensive information about this fascinating place.

Trail to Sokolovac Panoramic Point

One of the most attractive routes in the Djerdap National Park, it climbs to the highest peaks of the Danube Gorge in Serbia, to the Sokolovac point (626 meters). From there, you can admire the wide and spectacular panorama of the gorge in the Gospodin Vir area, from Bosman to Greben. The route starts from road 34, approximately 23 km north of Donji Milanovac and 32 km east of Golubac. Although it is only 3.3 km long, the rather steep slope (15%) makes the route quite difficult, but does not present any technical or dangerous sections.

Golubac Fortress

One of Serbia’s most beautiful and impressive historical monuments has stood guard over the entrance to the Danube Gorge for centuries. As spectacular as its now perfectly renovated walls and towers are, the past of this magnificent fortification is equally fascinating. The Golubac Fortress is located a few kilometers from the town of the same name, right on the banks of the Danube at the river’s entrance to the dramatic gorge. First mentioned in 1335, but built before that date, the fortress occupies a strategically important point in this part of Europe, always at the center of the struggles for military dominance between the Serbs, Hungarians, Austrians, Ottomans and Bulgarians. Considered almost impregnable, the fortress has repelled over 120 attacks throughout history, and is also surrounded by numerous fascinating legends. With three distinct enclosures, it is especially notable for its 10 massive towers, built and developed over time. If you decide to visit the fortress, you should know that there are several levels of visit, the cheapest ticket offering access to the lower level of the fortress and some towers, while the upper towers and walls require more expensive tickets, are only for adults and you need appropriate equipment. The complex also includes an archaeological park that includes several historical buildings, as well as a beautiful promenade on the Danube. Also, if you follow a short path that starts on the other side of the road, you can discover some unique viewpoints towards the fortress, less known to visitors
